The first matches are locked, the routes to the final are clear, and the stage is set for what promises to be one of the most fiercely contested events of the season — the SGC Knockout Tournament.
Unlike strokeplay events where consistency across the field decides the winner, the knockout format introduces something entirely different: head-to-head combat. Each round is a battle between two players, where only one progresses and the other heads home. There are no second chances, no leaderboard watching — just one opponent, eighteen holes, and the knowledge that every shot matters.
With the first-round draw now completed, members can already see their potential route to the final. Just like the Champions League or FA Cup, the excitement lies not just in your first match, but in the possibilities that lie ahead from your half of the draw. Early clashes between some of our favourites already promise to produce heavy casualties, whilst others eye up their possible quarter-final or semi-final showdowns further down the road.
However, knockout golf has a habit of producing surprises. Form, handicap, and reputation can quickly be overturned when the pressure of matchplay takes hold. A single birdie, a well-timed par save, or a nerveless putt on the final green can turn the tide in an instant.
Strategy becomes critical. knowing when to play aggressively and when to apply pressure by simply keeping the ball in play. Decisions are key, as momentum can swing quickly, and a match that appears comfortably in hand can suddenly turn into a nail-biting finish.
As the competition unfolds, expect to see mind games develop, banter increase, dramatic finishes emerge, and hopefully we get the occasional giant-killing upset along the way too.
One thing is certain: by the time the final arrives, our eventual champion will have earned the title.
So to all those taking part: study the draw, prepare your game, and get your matches scheduled.
The road to the SGC Knockout title starts now.
Rules to remember
- It is your responsibility to arrange your own match, not the responsibility of the club! Just inform David Yi prior to the day so you can be paired in the same group.
- All matches must be played by the designated deadline. Deadline for Round 1 games to be completed is 11th April. (For matches not played, the person who has played the most games for SGC to that point will progress to the next round)
- Matches can be arranged outside of SGC games, provided both players are available.
- Men to play off Blue Tees, regardless of Handicap. Women to play off Red Tees
- Games are played in Matchplay format. The lowest score on the hole wins that hole, the player with the most holes won, wins the match.
- The player with the highest handicap, will receive 80% of the difference between themselves and their opponent. (For Example: If Player A has a handicap of 10 and Player B has a handicap of 20, the difference between the two players is 10 shots x 80% means Player B, will receive 8 shots. These will be taken on the hardest 8 holes on the course, indicated by Stroke Index 1-8 on the scorecard)
- The maximum handicap a player can receive after the 80% rule has been applied is capped at 18 shots.
