SGC Matchplay – Round 1 Update

So, with Round 1 now complete, our Matchplay Knockout Tournament enters it’s 2nd round.

There were a total of 11 of our 16 matches played, with 5 matches unfortunately having to be forfeited, due to work schedule and availability issues. Of the 11 matches that did take place, there was some great golf played by a number of players, with 5 of the 11 matches being won by the 14th hole or earlier!

Round 1 also proved to be significant in terms of some of the names to go out. Be it new member or old, the tournament proved reputation didin’t matter, as it provided some big scalps early on, with a number of our lower handicappers exiting the competition. Many will feel a new sense of optimism as the likes of Mark J, Brett, Todd and Shiv, all failed to progress to Round 2.

With the route to the final already known, many players are now looking forward to their 2nd round ties, with 2 of the 8 matches already taking place, producing our first 2 quarter finalists in Nils and Derrick. Congratulations both!

Some of the other games that must be worth a mention for the neutrals:

  • The Battle of the bandits between Mike & Joel, as both attempt to use their dodgy handicaps to great effect.
  • The olden but golden match up of KC Tay and Mark K, like a fine wine they both continue to get better with age.
  • The rumble in the jungle, as heavyweights Dave B & Kerry S look to slug it out to see who is last man standing.
  • The divorce maker, Mr & Mrs Schindler leave affection aside, as they go head to head for bragging honours at home

Recap of the rules

  • It is your responsibility to arrange your own match, not the responsibility of the club! Just inform David Yi prior to the day so you can be paired in the same group.
  • All matches must be played by the designated deadline. Deadline for Round 2 games to be completed is 16th May. (For matches not played, the person who has played the most games for SGC to that point will progress to the next round)
  • Matches can be arranged outside of SGC games, provided both players are available.
  • Men to play off Blue Tees, regardless of Handicap. Women to play off Red Tees
  • Games are played in Matchplay format. The lowest score on the hole wins that hole, the player with the most holes won, wins the match.
  • The player with the highest handicap, will receive 80% of the difference between themselves and their opponent. (For Example: If Player A has a handicap of 10 and Player B has a handicap of 20, the difference between the two players is 10 shots x 80% means Player B, will receive 8 shots. These will be taken on the hardest 8 holes on the course, indicated by Stroke Index 1-8 on the scorecard)
  • The maximum handicap a player can receive after the 80% rule has been applied is capped at 18 shots.
